Concept

The goal and challenge of this project was to design a building that goes beyond the purely functional requirements of a medical care center and understands design as an important part of the healing process. In its urban context, the building integrates sensitively into the layered surroundings, characterized by a mix of buildings and uses of varying scales. By setting the building back from the street, a protected entrance area is created that warmly welcomes visitors. The staggered upper floor reduces the perceived mass of the building from the street and creates a gentle transition to the smaller-scale residential development to the south.

Facade

The staggered building volume is softened by flowing transitions across the facade surfaces. Accentuated joint grids and large window openings structure the natural zinc facade and intuitively guide visitors toward the main entrance. The treatment “bunkers” are defined by a bold, folded facade pattern, which makes the massive building sections appear lighter. The resulting color-shifting gradients give the technically partially windowless facade areas structure, contrast, and a sense of scale. The building seems to dissolve at its two ends, where the treatments also take place.

Digital & Craft

For the design and planning of the facades, the latest digital technologies were employed. The constructive logic of the facade was developed as a custom computer program, allowing a wide variety of design options to be tested while simultaneously evaluating their feasibility in collaboration with the executing trades. Although the building’s design and planning rely heavily on digital tools, the choice of materials and the detailing were deliberately executed with artisanal craftsmanship, rather than prefabricated modular construction. Seemingly paradoxical, digital design meets masterful craftsmanship, giving the building its surreal character.

Interior
